Youth Art Month: Meet the Students of Cleveland Print Room

March is Youth Art Month, and Lomography is featuring students, teachers, and class projects in celebration!

To start the party, we meet students of Cleveland Print Room, a non-profit community darkroom and educational center located in the Quadrangle Arts District in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2015, the Cleveland Foundation announced their new arts and culture strategy focused on increasing access to mastery-based arts programs for youth in every Cleveland neighborhood. Cleveland Print Room was a major recipient of the grant, using the funding to support a pilot year-round youth mastery program in photography for middle and high school students in low-income neighborhoods in Cleveland. The program teaches students technical aspects of photography; develop their visual literacy and storytelling skills; and expose them to the business of photography, including curating shows and marketing their work.

The program has two parts, Project Snapshot and Multiple Exposure. Project Snapshot is a sixteen-week black and white photography program that will teach students the basics and fundamentals of analog film photography. By learning these traditional photography methods, students are able to use these skills to portray their own visual interpretations of the world around them. Students learn about camera functions, 35mm film processing and making photographic prints in the dark room. Multiple Exposure focuses on Instant photography using the Lomo'Instant Wide.
