Before the Canvas: Lomo'Instant Shots on Ivan Woo's Photorealism Art

Singapore-based photorealism artist Ivan Woo shows us a glimpse of his art-making process through instant snaps taken with the Lomo'Instant.

How did you get started with art?

Ever since I was a kid, I was always interested in drawing and painting.

Tell us more about your artistic journey. How do you develop your skills?

First, you need to be sure of where your interest lies. For me, I've always loved realistic art, and I've spent a lot of time seeking advice and how to go about honing my skill. I'm lucky enough to be able to get in touch with a lot of artists from different countries that are kind enough to share their knowledge with me. Youtube is a great resource as well, going through tutorial videos help. But I think it is most important to be disciplined and to have the right attitude.

Who / What are the biggest influences in your work?

Definitely the pioneer batch of photorealist that started the movement of photorealism, Chuck Close, Roberto Bernardi, Audrey Flack, Tjalf Sparnaay and so on ...

Is it your first time exploring analogue photography? Any interesting things you encountered or challenges?

Yes, it is my first time. I struggled a bit at first since I am not much of a photographer. First few attempts can be frustrating and are 'failed' shoots which is part of trial and error. Despite this, I slowly adapted with the help of the tutorials.

What is your favorite feature or what do you like most about the Lomo'Instant?

I think the developing of the instant image or photos thrills me. I love seeing them develop fast. Instant photography is truly a gamble. The Lomo'Instant camera is a great tool to carry around.

Any tips for first-time shooters?

Just shoot as much as you can. Don't worry too much about shooting a certain way or else time will be wasted. I don't like to waste time so just have fun with it.
