Electro-Indie LomoAmigos Soldout Shoots With the Diana F+

2

Meet our Latest LomoAmigos! Electro / Indie / Rock band, SoldOut. They take the Diana F+ out and experiment with analogue documentation. Travelling through Europe, these Belgium natives sure know how to rock a crowd and have fun while at it!

Names: Charlotte and David
City: Brussels
Country: Belgium

Tell the community a little bit about yourselves? What do you do for fun and is it the same thing you do for a living?

DAVID: My work is fun and my fun is work, I can’t set them apart. I’ve been doing electronic music for a long time, I started with a commodore 64, that’s a long time ago… I learned everything by myself; I’ve never been to music school, so I have a different approach from Charlotte, who took classical music lessons at first. We’re an electronic music band, but we are influenced by other genres. We write songs first.
CHARLOTTE: I’m 27, I’ve been writing music since I was about 16, and I’m lucky enough to do it for a living now. I also love art, I actually studied one semester of photography as a major, in San Francisco City College and then I switched to graphic design. I studied graphic design at ERG in Brussels. Design and photography are some of the things I do for fun.

What elements of your music are analogue and what qualities do these elements add that digital can’t?

DAVID: We often use analogue keyboards, for their warmth and their imperfections, it gives the machine a unique sound. Even two of the same keyboards won’t sound the same.

Congratulations on your recent nomination for best music video at the Barcelona clip Festival. What is your favorite part of the video making process?

CHARLOTTE: We really like to let the directors come up with an idea, and translate what they feel in the song. That’s what I like the most, to see how people picture the music.
DAVID: I love seeing the result. The video in the end is always different from what I imagined, so it’s always a surprise.

How long have you been Lomographers (or are you new to this whole thing)?

CHARLOTTE: I bought a Holga, in 2000, in a small shop in San Francisco. I didn’t know a lot about photography, and as I was talking to a neighbor about it, he told me I absolutely had to buy a Holga, which I did a week later. But I didn’t use it so much. I’m only re-discovering the whole thing now with the Diana. The fact that I have a flash now changes everything.
DAVID: It’s completely new to me.

Describe the Diana F+ in five words.

DAVID: unexpected, spontaneous, fast, fun, and looks great

You are constantly on the road, what place would you most like to shoot with your Diana F+?

CHARLOTTE: All the hotel rooms.
DAVID: Berlin!

How did you like shooting with the Diana F+ and what were people´s reactions to the camera?

CHARLOTTE: I loved it, I absolutely had no idea how it would turn like. A guy asked me “Is this a toy?”

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/ Lomographic encounter that you have ever had.

CHARLOTTE: A few years ago I used a roll of film that was lying at home for a while. I didn’t know but the film was already used. So I shot the roll, and when I developed I had a double exposure with somebody else’s pictures and mine. I never found out whose pictures they were!

*If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your Diana F+, who would it be and why? *

DAVID: The little guy in Twin Peaks. These pictures can’t go wrong!
CHARLOTTE: I would love to shoot Peter Sellers, he’s an amazing actor, and Dr Stangelove is my favorite movie of all times.

Of all the Lomography Cameras available, which one do you think is the most Rockin’ and why?

CHARLOTTE: I love my Diana and I would like to try the Diana instant back. To see the results right away!

What’s your favorite photo you took with the Diana F+ and why?

CHARLOTTE: I love the picture of my piano, the colors, the way the wood looks. I have this piano since I’m 6, and I’m very attached to it. And it’s is actually the first picture of it that I have.

DAVID: The picture in the elevator, with Charlotte, Francois (tourmanager), Fred (video artist) and Tom (manager). I love the mood of the picture. I love touring, we have a lot of fun, and it reminds me of it.

If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be (song title & artist please). *
*Foals:
Hummer
Cat Power: Metal Heart
Front 242: Take one

What got you into photography at the first place?
CHARLOTTE: I found my father’s old Olympus in the basement when I was 14!
Your advice to future Diana F + shooters.
CHARLOTTE: Don’t think, shoot!
