@neanderthalis, when I got this back from the lab it made me think of you. Could it be that what you thought was a light leak is actually 'Lubitel' style ghosting, which is a type of lens flare? This image has two of them.

It could be. If it is just a flare, it would be awesome. I thought it may have been a leak, but only during intensely sunny conditions. It did not look like the flares I get on my short lens cameras like Ultra Wide and Slim or other low mm lenses.
I did not know much about the camera when I bought it other than it awesomely Russian and looked so cool. I picked it up online for about $27 US total at the time. I think it had a plastic case but it disintegrated after 2 outings. I would like to get the leather case.

You could try this out next time, the sun was at about 10 o'clock to me and mid afternoon when I shot this, position yourself that way... I think a light leak would be easier to cure than ghosting, a lenshood would be difficult to sort out for an 8M. I got an 8M, a Symbol and a 35 from the big auction site. Sounds excessive, but I couldn't make up my mind between two, and the shipping was the same for all three. At less than $20 each... They're mint too. I'm going to do a review soon comparing the three, to help people choose. From an operational standpoint they are very, very different, the lenses are all the same though so the photos are pretty much the same. I would recommend grabbing a 35 if you ever get the chance. It's an 8M with convenience built in. The Symbol is probably my least favourite.

The 8m came with the leather case. It's very, very FAUX! felty sort of stuff with hard plastic adhered to it. It'll protect it though.
