Series „What if…“

The starting point for this project was the assumption that any placard in election campaigning is about representation. The placard with the picture of a candidate is meant to represent the candidate and to help sending out his/her message to the electorate. The project „What if…“ of a number of double exposures in which each exposure stands for a certain perspective. The first exposure is a simple picture of the placard. The second exposure is taken from the perspective of the depicted candidate. The camera perspective tries to find out what the candidate would see, if he/her would stand at that place where the placard was hanged.

So the double exposure is bringing together 1. the certain message that is send and 2. the hypothetical gaze to the possible audience or the place where there should be an audience. During taking this pictures, it not just turned out how poorly some placards where hanged, because for example there was no place for an audience as the hypothetical gaze was just staring at a wall. In other cases the candidates seemed to watch placards of other competitors – which could mean a lot of different things. Finally, I came across some placards that we’re vandalized and therefore in some cases revealed a very strong aesthetic of symbolic violence. These placards already were very strong images on their own, so the second exposure was omitted.
