the hypnotist...

This is Jose Custodio de Faria, popularly known as Abade Faria, a local catholic monk who pioneered the study of hypnotism. He is referred to as.. the Father of Hypnotism.

He was fictionalized by Alexandre Dumas in his famous work - "The Count of Monte Cristo" as the character of Faria, the italian monk who mentors Edmund Dantes, while in prison at the notorious Château d'lf and was portrayed superbly by Richard Harris in the 2002 movie adaptation.

Abade Faria was a patriot, playing a pivotal role in the revolt of the Goan priests against the Portuguese colonials and later took part in the French Revolution.

The statue installed in 1945, in tribute to Abade Faria is the most recognizable, landmark here in Panjim, Goa, welcoming us, as we drive into town.

This exposure of the statue is overlapped with another recognizable imagery of Panjim...the beautiful window patterns of the Hotel Republica at the Old Secretariat Square
