Newcomer of the Week: emmesalvezza

3

Italy’s Michele, also known in the community as emmesalvezza, works as a filmmaker and a photographer. He wholeheartedly embraces the inherent quirks of shooting in film and considers light leaks, visible grains, and other “defects” as the “most interesting part of a shot” that need not to be corrected.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I am a human being, 36 years old. I work as a filmmaker and photographer but I enjoy more when I work on my personal projects. [It is] not for money but inspired by a real passion.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

A friend of mine, who is also a photographer, introduced me to the community. I immediately realized that it is a fantastic place to find continuous inspiration.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Definitely “not thinking” because rational thought kills the instinct and authenticity and takes it far away from the purity that should be the primary aim of each artist .

In this digital age, why still film?

Why not? You can touch film with your hands, the picture it produces is chemistry, life, physical, and above all unique. In addition, the time between pressing the shutter and the moment you see the photos allows you to feel affection for it and love even the defects. In digital, you try to reduce and eliminate defects and errors which are the most interesting part of a shot.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

At this time, I’m using a Nikon L35AF. It is compact, automatic, and simple to use for quick shots on the street without attracting too much attention.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

Each camera has its own peculiarities. I tried many Lomography cameras and would like to have them all. At the moment, I want a Holga 120 to photograph in medium format.

Any song or movie you live by?

Fellini’s 8 1/2. It shows how one tries to live while dancing between dream and reality and trying to mix them. And about making deals with their ghosts and reaching an unstable equilibrium that allows one to stay eternally alive.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

I find this image very suggestive for its point of view, color, and ability to capture movement without losing the shadow’s shape. Good work @ziggymar!

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

My friend @mikycor. A great lomographer and film lover, although he is very lazy.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I am seeking visions different from mine, as well as suggestions, inspirations, ideas, and food for the eyes and mind.

Thank you Michele for sharing your thoughts with us! Welcome to the community and looking forward to seeing more of your work.
