Hey Lana! What interesting stuff are you shooting these days?

Currently I am working on a personal project in which I research the effect of my photos on my memories. Capturing certain fragments of my life make me feel more in control. By framing these fragments I feel like I can choose which parts to remember.

How old were you when you discovered the world of photography?

I started photographing around the age of 15. Photography became a very big part of my life since then.

What is it about photography that influences you to always do your best and create something inspiring and valuable?

For me photography is (one of) the most natural and logic way to express myself. My work is a reflection of the beauty I find in daily life and a translation of my emotions and thoughts. I want to show the viewer pieces of my life. Whenever truly happened in that split second, or totally staged, my photos always show my feelings of that exact moment. Through my work I don’t only visualize my own emotions and thoughts but also aim to make certain topics more discussable. Recurrent topics in my work are the intimacy with yourself and the intimacy between others as well as the expression of the human body and the human sexuality.

Your work is all about emphasizing female sensuality and capturing romantic moments. How do you encourage your models to express this side of their personality?

It’s always important to make someone feel comfortable. Usually the rest is a matter of good timing. Most of the times I know the people I shoot with. I love to photograph my friends. Because they are close to me the interaction between us is very spontaneous.

Your fascination with the female form had existed long before you became a photographer. Was it challenging to you to shoot something different and in some way provocative?

I’ve always been very fascinated by the nude human body. Shooting people nude has always felt natural to me. For me it’s surprising to see how nudity and sexuality can still be so offensive to many people. There are still so many taboos about the female body and the female sexuality. People are very easily shocked by – what for me seem to be – some of the most normal/natural things.

What attracted you to work with analogue cameras? Would you always pick analogue rather than digital ones?

When working with a digital camera you’ll have quick results. Since you can directly see what you like and dislike about your image, this can be very beneficial when you’ve just started photographing Analogue photography takes a bit more patience, but also has a lot more character. What you get back for it is a lot of excitement when finally seeing the developed photos. Personally I find the working process of analogue photography a lot more intimate.
