"Wherever God spends the day, He comes home to sleep in Rwanda." - Naomi Benaron

Rwanda, the "land of a thousand hills", is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in Africa. Located just a tad south of the equator, it has a cooler climate than you might expect because of its altitude. (Its lowest point is 950 metres above sea level) The beauty of the landscape belies the horrors of its recent past. Between April and July 1994, at least 800, 000 people were killed in what is officially known as the Genocide against the Tutsis.

I was in Rwanda with a small group of British young people as a guest of the charity PHARP (Peace, Healing and Reconciliation Project) which is working to restore trust in understandably divided communities, and the Free Methodist Church of Rwanda. We visited a variety of development projects, schools and churches but the highlight for me were the visits to the children's ward of Kibogora Hospital where we played parachute games and did simple craft activities with the youngsters and their families. Photographically, I was caught out by the weather. Conditions were much cloudier than I'd anticipated based on my last visit to the country. But my LC-A combined with cross-processed Velvia managed to inject some drama!
