How did you become a Lomographer?

I first heard of Lomography (or just Lomo) in high school almost a decade ago. Everyone in Bekasi refer to those underwater disposable camera as "Lomo" (I think it was actually called Aquapix). I got my hands on it, and loved the simplicity of it.

Fast forward to two years ago — I was looking for an instant camera when I stumbled upon a Kickstarter campaign for the Lomo'Instant Automat. I'd heard of Lomo'Instant cameras before that, but couldn't afford to buy one because I was still in college. In the two years since leaving college, I'd made decent money from several jobs, so I instantly backed that Kickstarter campaign for that sexy red instant camera. One of my best financial decisions ever, haha!

You've taken really cool photos with the Lomo'Instant Automat. Can you share with us which kinds of projects you usually snap on this creative camera?

I take my Lomo'Instant Automat everywhere. I mean everywhere. I've traveled to waterfalls, islands, seas, mountains, cities. I shoot the places that I went to, and I like to do those photo-within-photo shots with instant films. I just love it. It's so unique. And whenever I look at that photo, I instantly remember the story behind that instant photo.

Do you have a favorite photo you've taken with the Lomo'Instant Automat? Why is it your fave?

Shoot! That's hard, because I love every single photos I take with it. But if I have to choose, it's these three:

The first one is a photo of Padar Island (one of the island in Komodo National Park), it's the most majestic place I've ever traveled to. Yet.
This second one is a portrait of my cousin. I just love the contrast between the red and blue. It has that sort of lo-fi feel to it.
This third one is a photo of my traveling buddy on one of the beaches in Nusa Penida (Bali). I didn't even notice the cloud until the photo fully developed. The perfect timing.

Any tips for using the Lomo'Instant Automat?

Just shoot. When shooting with an instant camera, it's a good idea to be instant, to be spontaneous. But don't forget to maximize the EV+1 feature on the Automat. It helps me a lot to get the right exposure on the subject in a back-lit situation or low-lighting situation.

Any memorable stories as a Lomographer that you would like to share with our readers?

Wherever I take the Lomo'Instant Automat, people always ask "What camera is that?". Peoples are curious about the Automat because of how unique the design is. And they are always delighted when I show them what it does. When traveling, it's always nice to see people (especially locals) smiling with you, and definitely worth remembering.

If your journey as a Lomographer could be summed up in a song, which song would it be?

Jay Wolf's Starlight. I don't know, that song just popped in my head!

Anything you want to say to Lomographers out there?

Take your camera everywhere with you. Don't think too much. Just shoot. And have fun while shooting. Cheers! :)

Thanks for the lovely interview, Aria!

Great photo's with the automat, but I really have to ask, what is it that you are shooting these "photo within a photo" pictures with? Looks great!
