Around The World In Analogue: Kabukicho, Shinjuku

11

Searching for information about Kabukicho—a district in Shinjuku in Tokyo, Japan—will lead you to a few worrying results. Deemed dangerous and sketchy, it is famously known as a red-light and entertainment district that comes with a general warning for tourists: “If someone (is outside) and trying to get you inside—don’t go.” A piece of advice that applies to anywhere in the world, really!

This doesn't mean you shouldn't go. Kabukicho has charms of its own, and, as one travel website said—as long as you're not looking for trouble, then you're all good.

Lomographer @n_u_m_b_f_a_c_e took a few photos around Shinjuku, including Kabukicho, on a snowy day and shared some personal insights!

I took all these pictures in one day. It was the heaviest snowfall in Tokyo in four years. I immediately decided to go to Shinjuku. I love walking around the city on a rainy or snowy night and taking pictures as if I were watching a scene from a movie through my lens!

To be honest, Shinjuku Kabukicho is a smelly, dirty, and unsafe town. But for some reason, it is also a town with a mysterious charm that attracts people. It is said to be a town that never sleeps, lit up with lots of neon lights, where people drink until morning and the streets are constantly crowded with people.

I don't have a favorite restaurant or bar in particular, but the chaotic atmosphere is why I like Kabukicho so much! There are many big streets and back streets, and I like the contrast between busy and bright places and quiet and dark places. I especially like Shinjuku Golden Gai, the drinking district. There are five narrow alleys with many small bars. It is a popular spot for tourists. You can't help but take pictures as you walk through the narrow alleys.

Shinjuku has many unique streets around the station. There is a tremendous flow of people on the streets, and you could walk around all day long and never get tired of it.
