Oh the Places You'll Shoot in 2023

2

With the start of a new year, there’s always that feeling of excitement in the air. There are so many things to look forward to and many new possibilities that might come your way. Whether you’ll be dipping your toes into new places in 2023, or garnering the strength to bring out your camera to familiar social events, here are a few situations in which to practice your photography.

Let's Get Physical

The world's most common new year's resolution is probably to lose weight or get fit. One way to keep you sticking to this resolution is to try using it as a new subject for your photography. These new sports and activities will bring you out of your comfort zone and give you a chance to not just try something new physically but also creatively. Whether it's trying newer exercises like bouldering or sticking to the classics like swimming or football, shooting in between the breaks of your exercise is an interesting idea to try out. Sports photography demands high shutter speed and zoom lenses but you can always play around with your settings, film stocks, and even lenses to achieve some truly fun shots.

Take a Walk in Nature

Take advantage of what your area has to offer in terms of nature-based recreational activities. If you’re lucky to have access to parks, beaches, and mountain trails, take that first step at spending some time in nature. These trips will do wonders not just for your mental health but also give you an opportunity to test your hand at landscape and nature photography. Bringing a low ISO film with the amount of sunlight you’ll be getting will give you breathtaking results and trying out film stocks like LomoChrome Turquoise or Lomography Redscale will make each shot out of this world.

Music Sounds Better With You

Whether you're having an intimate celebration with your best friends or attending a full-on music festival, it's always a great idea to bring your camera with you. As a nightlife photographer sometimes it is handier to bring an easy-to-use camera in order for you to not always be in the mindset of capturing every moment. Taking your camera out once in a while to snap something is a sure way to make sure you can still have fun while capturing great moments during your nights out.

Cameras like the LC-A+, LomoApparat, and the Simple Use Camera allow you to shoot without thinking. Besides that, don't be shy! Meet new people by asking if you could take their portrait during the party. More than just getting a nice photo, it's a great way to make new friends who love the same music as you.

Be a Tourist in Your City

You can live in a city for many years and still not see all its secrets. I experienced this firsthand when I lived abroad in Tokyo for a few months and my Japanese friends would be amazed at all the places they discovered through me. Living in the same place for a long time can make us too comfortable with our routines. It's always an interesting idea to put on a tourist lens and visiting places you have never been before. Going to that hidden bar or that far-flung restaurant across town, or even just walking around a district you're not familiar with, these experiences can bring new life to your area. Long exposures, panoramas, and even trying a new film format can make your pictures extra memorable when discovering these new parts of town.

Take Me Home

Lastly, sometimes taking a trip home is something to keep us going for the new year. With the fast-paced world we live in there are times when we tend to forget about family or spend time with our loved ones. Taking a trip back home or just spending time with the people we call our family is a nice way to refresh and be ready for the coming year. Seeing how things have changed in your old stomping ground, revisiting old friends and acquaintances, or spending a day with your best friends is something that we should try to do once in a while during the rest of the year. Being able to capture these moments on film will be a treasure for the future and a great way to look back on these people and places.

With the upcoming year ahead of us, there are a lot of exciting things in store for the whole Lomography Community. Quoting from Dr. Seuss, "You're off the Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!"

Happy New Year To Everyone and have a wonderful year ahead!
