Diagnosing flash photography at top sync speed

First time playing with a proper flash (Nikon SB-22s). I think what happened here is the top sync speed (1/125) is not supposed to have any issues, but due to a defect the top shutter plane is chasing the bottom just enough to cut off part of the frame when the flash fires. This happens inconsistently and to varying degrees, sometimes obscuring a large chunk of the frame, sometimes just a sliver, and sometimes not at all. I think I’ll try to get around it by manually selecting a slower shutter speed of 1/60. On the bright side, the flash exposure and bounce flash effect look lovely!
